McGill Grad applying to US Med Schools

Hi,

I am an American/Canadian dual citizen who is graduating from McGill with a 3.35 (hopefully 3.4) in Science (Anatomy). I have yet to take the MCAT and am planning on it this summer. Provided my score is average (around 30) is it worth it applying to American medical schools.

I am from Michigan so I would obviously be applying to UMichigan, Michigan State, and Wayne State, but beyond those in-state schools I dont know what schools give me a good chance for acceptance....

doctor recommendations

I know a few people that applied to med school this last year and i found 2 of these people's results intersting. One was a guy who had a 4.25/4.5 gpa, 11.5 mcat, and had volunteered at a hospital and old folks home. The second was a girl who had a 3.7/4.5 gpa, 9.5 mcat, and worked at a hospital ( she got the job because her mom knew a doctor that worked there). She also had doctor's as references and her parents were doctors. Both were the same age (3rd year students). The guy got rejected...

Is it necessary to have a Bio-chem credit in order to apply for med? I know some of the schools require this but I am still not sure if it is essential for every school. I've taken Organic Chem as a full year course earlier but I'm not sure as to if I should be taking "intro to bio-chem" as well.

Secondly, I have taken a half credit in English already but I was wondering if its necessary to take another half credit so as to have a full one? Or would a half credit do?

Hi guys,

I'm standing in the middle of an amazing, new Apple store in SoHo, NYC, giving the iMac 17" flatscreen a shot. WOW. The functionality and style are pretty fab so far (this is coming from a chronic PC user). Any of you out there work from an iMac? If so, do you have some insights that would help give a PC user the final boot to switch over?

Well I have a series of questions. I hope that you experienced people can answer them...

1) Do volunteer Hours play a huge impact?
2) Do we really need to take Physics? Did everyone do so? I am in Highschool and I was told I did not need it, so I didnt take it. Am I doomed?
3) When do people prepare for MCAT.

Lowest GPA possible

What is the lowest undergrad GPA that anyone has seen accepted for an American Medical School. I read of someone who was accepted at Harvard with a 3.20 in Computer Science. He also had a PhD and was a faculty member at another University.

Hi Ian,

I was just curious if there was a particular reason why the Quebec medical schools were not included on this board? I find the discussions here very interesting and helpful for the most part, but I feel that it's a slight disservice to exclude the french schools. Myself, I dropped french after grade 9 (didn't like my french teacher), however I have become increasingly interested in knowing the perspective of french-canadians wrt to med school admission.

THe way things are working out I might end up having to choose between work as a medical science research assistant and a job in business admin. An exerpt from an interesting article submitted by a physician attorney for a law magazine that I read (i'm an MD going to law school right now). This is probably where Canada is headed.

For doctors, it depends on where they are. I know doctors, several years out, very good training, very good physicians, who make less than $75K. I've represented physicians with over 20 years of experience who are happy to get $150K. If it's a managed care saturated market, no cash for physicians....

I am 26 years old and have just finished my undergraduate BSc in Psychology. I studied part time because of various reasons, mainly having to work to support myself as well as volunteer, and then I developed a depression which hindered things a bit. Does anyone here know someone who got into med school and didn't actually graduate high school? Like someone who did a degree as a special student or who did an equivalency exam and then went to university? I know people in Ph.d programs who did this but for med school?

I am thinking about applying to UofO & Mac only (no MCATs yet) but am not an Ontario resident. Should I just save my $ until I have the MCAT & apply to all the med schools? Do I stand a chance at Mac? (I read on these boards 'somewhere' that UofO does not admit many out of province applicants....)

p.s. I am 33yrs old & want to get crackin' but know I have to be realistic. Thanks.....I would really appreciate some honest advice.
